Past winner profile - Celebration of Scouting Awards

30th August 2019

With the deadline for nominations for the Celebration of Scouting Awards 2019 edging closer, we’re continuing to profile some of last year’s winners.

Next up is Ivor Davies who won the Adult Volunteer Award 2018.

In September 2016, Ivor Davies joined Scouting as a 67-year-old grandfather. His first role was providing support for a new group that was opening in Sully. This was the first time Ivor had been involved in Scouting since he was a young man before joining the Navy.

Ivor volunteered at a time when there were no other adults to help the new group. Immediately, he got involved with the local development officer to ensure the group progressed. Within a month Ivor took on the role of Group Scout leader.

As well as being a Group Scout Leader, Ivor has attended every meeting of the section supporting the leaders. Also, for eight months after forming the new group he selflessly used his car as the group’s storage unit until the community hall, where the group meet, granted them official storage.

In just under twelve months Ivor completed all the training for section leader and management roles, as he repeatedly said, “I can’t ask someone to do the training if I haven’t done it myself.”

Ivor successfully led the executive committee and applied for grants for crucial equipment to support the group as it grew with the addition of a Scout Section and more outdoor activities.

Ivor’s hard work and commitment didn’t stop there. He got involved in all the district activities which included running; 3 Beaver, 4 Cub and 5 Scout events per year, plus some whole district events. Ivor has attended most of the district section and management meetings in the last two years. This equates to one for each section each term, displaying Ivor’s dedication to Scouting.

Most Scout groups stop for the summer holiday but not the 1st Sully. Ivor ensures they meet as a whole group every other week and have fun fire lighting, bell boating or other outdoor adventures.

Congratulations to Ivor who is a great example to the Scouting community on how to lead a group from zero to 70+ members and 10+adults (either leaders or trustees), and in less than 2 years.

The Scouts Adult Award is one of eight categories you can enter in the Celebration of Scouting Awards 2019.

The deadline for entries is Friday 6th September and winners will be announced at a ceremony during the ScoutsCymru AGM in Llandridnod Wells on October 26th.
