Past winner profile - Celebration of Scouting Awards

9th August 2019

With the nominations for the Celebration of Scouting Awards 2019 now open, we’re profiling some of last year’s winners.

Next up is Ken Hinton who won the Trustee Volunteer Award 2018.

Ken was nominated for the award following his transformation of a derelict building in the Brecon Beacons into a safe space for Scouts to meet.

Having dedicated his time to Scouting since 1972, Ken chairs the Mid Glamorgan Area Trustee Management Committee and is also Chair of the Management Committee of the Area campsite at Plas Dolygaer. As Chair of the campsite at Dolygaer, he recognised that the site was in desperate need of refurbishment.

The building located on the campsite was originally the station for Brecon Railway and had fallen into disrepair and was deemed unsafe. Ken championed fundraising to bring the premises into a useable condition for the Scouts. The building was redesigned and almost totally rebuilt and has since become a place in the Brecon Beacons where young people can experience the beauty of their surroundings.

Ken has a vast knowledge of management, governance and engaging with Volunteers. He has trained many volunteers and passed on these skills, always being available to help with sound words of advice.

Ken, described has having his ‘heart in helping others’, has been an inspiration in his community and a true ambassador for Scouting.

Congratulations to Ken for his continued hard work and dedication to Scouting!

The Trustee Volunteer Award is one of eight categories you can enter in the Celebration of Scouting Awards 2019.

The deadline for entries is Friday 6th September and winners will be announced at a ceremony during the ScoutsCymru AGM in Llandridnod Wells on October 26th.
