Past winner profile - Celebration of Scouting Awards

29th July 2019

With the nominations for the Celebration of Scouting Awards 2019 now open, over the next few weeks, we’re going to profile some of last year’s winners.

Next up is Ty Hafan Scout Group who won the Community Impact Award.

Ty Hafan Scout Group was given the award as a result of its fantastic work at Ty Hafan Hospice where it has made Scouting accessible to children with life limiting illnesses.

The group was set in up in 2007 by Ruth Weltch who, off the back of the Scouting Centenary, wanted to create a new group that could be taken forward in to the next 100 years.

Those who would not have easy access to Scouting were at the centre of this initiative, and after very little convincing, the staff at Ty Hafan agreed that this would be a truly life enriching opportunity for the young people in their care.

To fund the start-up of the group, a Scout football match was held at the Millennium Stadium where there were bucket collections for donations. The match was a great success and once the money was donated to Ty Hafan, the first session was held for the children living in the hospice.

Soon after setting up, Ty Hafan Scout Group began to realise that the Scouting sessions could be beneficial to siblings also. It began to run regular sibling camps where siblings have been able to attend events such as Scarefest in Gilwell and the Jurassic International Jamboree in Dorset.

The feedback received from the sibling group sessions was fantastic, so Ty Hafan Scouts wanted to evolve even further and began talks with the hospice to set up a Family Camp. This would allow the children to go camping with their families, an experience many had never had.

The group was taken over by Cathie Steele in 2011 and then the leader role was returned to Ruth in 2017. Both leaders and all Scouting staff involved already had roles within Scouts and took on Ty Hafan Scout Group as an extra in order to make sure that all children, no matter the situation, have access to opportunities within Scouts. This initiative provided the children of Ty Hafan with fun and happiness in a time that can be the most difficult.

A huge well done to all those involved in Ty Hafan Scout Group, you truly deserved to be the winner of last year’s award!

The Community Impact Award is one of eight categories you can enter in the Celebration of Scouting Awards 2019.

The deadline for entries is Friday 6th September and winners will be announced at a ceremony during the ScoutsCymru AGM in Llandridnod Wells on October 26th.
