Celebration of Scouting Awards

With the nominations for the Celebration of Scouting Awards 2019 now open, over the next few weeks, we’re going to profile some of last year’s winners.

First up, it’s 1st Johnston Scouts who won the New & Innovative Scouting Award.

1st Johnston Scouts were recognised on the back of their success in the Young Reporters for the Environment Litter Less Campaign, an international journalism competition run in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy on behalf of FEE (The Foundation for Environmental Education).

The campaign empowers young people between 11-25 to take a stand on a global fight against litter and articulate these issues through writing, photography and video.

1st Johnston Scouts competed against many other schools and groups in the 11-14 category and were awarded as both the national winners and also the winners of the international prize! They were also the only Scout group to be awarded a prize.

1st Johnston Scouts decided that their topic should be regarding how litter and plastic waste is affecting the nesting gannet population who nest off the coast of West Wales. They discovered that the gannets were being severely affected by plastic which had been used by the birds to construct their nests. They spoke to experts such as those from the RSPB about the impact that this would be having on the birds, which shows collaborative working.

As well as writing the article itself, they conducted a survey of local people regarding awareness of the plight of the gannets. These findings were then displayed as part of an exhibition and included in the article itself.

As well as winning the Keep Wales Tidy award, their entry also gained attention of social media with an education officer from the National Assembly being “wowed by the research work” and they also met the Environment Minister and spoke to her about what the government can do to stop marine plastic.

Well done 1st Johnston Scouts on this great piece of work and picking up last year’s award.
